Introducing PowerBuilder 12 .NET
A dormant giant gets a new lease on life as a .NET-compatible
development environment.
[...] The upcoming release of PowerBuilder 12, which is compliant
with the .NET Common Language Runtime (CLR) promises to be the
most effective method to migrate valuable PowerScript-based code
assets to a standards-compliant, interoperable format with minimum
risk and exposure. This article explores some of the new PowerBuilder
platform's potential to accomplish that goal. It also offers suggestions
on how to approach a PowerBuilder legacy application migration
effort while leveraging available developer skills and knowledge.

Come Get Your Beta While It’s Hot . . .
The PowerBuilder 12.0 beta has officially started. It's pretty
hard to overstate the magnitude of the changes that are taking
place within PowerBuilder for this version. As a result, it's
more important than ever for as many people as possible to participate
in order to get the most amount of feedback as possible back to
Sybase. It's going to be a lot easier to let Sybase know there's
a problem with a feature now before the "die is cast"
and it's easier for them to fix than to wait until after the release
to find the problem, and then have to wait for an EBF for a correction.

Hey Buddy, Can You Spare Some Code...?
PowerBuilder fans have been sharing code with one another since...well
at least since the beginning days of CompuServe in the early 1990s.
When PowerBuilder users gathered in just a single section in a
general interest programming forum, we had an associated file
library section, and when we moved to our own PowerSoft forum
we had a series of file libraries.

PowerBuilder returns from the dead…
Not sure how I missed it when it was first released. Or perhaps
my age is showing and I just forgot I saw it earlier. In any event,
it’s an IDC
report reviewing the history of PowerBuilder and commenting
on the .Net direction incorporated into the last few releases.
Of particular interest for people using the product since the
early days, it includes the release date for every major version
back to 1.0.

How
to protect against Reverse Engineering
PowerBuilder decompilers are becoming more and more powerful.
This leaves PB applications open to reverse engineering and unauthorized
operations. Someone could crack your software protection to perform
illegal transactions or spread unprotected copies of your product.
Both in-house and commercial applications can be affected.
PBProtect, the obfuscator for PowerBuilder, defends
against reverse engineering. With no effect on execution time
or maintenance, PBProtect’s one-click process
is simple and effective.

Using the Microsoft Chart Controls in PowerBuilder
You may not be aware of this, but Microsoft now provides a rather
powerful charting control free of charge as an add-in for .NET
3.5. It's available for download at http://xrl.us/ben3pm. Because
it supports 35 different chart types (see Figure 1), it can add
significant new charting capability to PowerBuilder applications.

Updating Your PowerBuilder Applications for Today's World
User Interface (UI) standards have evolved over the years and
custom-developed applications haven’t kept pace. Many applications
developed in the 1990’s now have a dated look and feel.
With some minimal effort, applications can be given a fresh look
by making a few key User Interface (UI) changes. At stake is no
less than your user’s satisfaction with your software.

How
to Make your Applications Multilingual

multilingual!
A special version of the Enable Engine allows
customers to deploy multilingual applications with Appeon and
PB.NET (both WinForms and WebForms). The new 2.7 version includes
