Visual
Guard PB 11.5 is out!
Novalys has been updating Visual
Guard for PowerBuilder. For those of you who have joined us
recently, Visual Guard is an innovative solution for PB application
security. Not only does VG combine end user authentication and
permissions into a single tool, it also enables you to create
permissions without coding.
VG for PB has been given an overhaul for the New Year. It's now
ready for PB 11.5 and supports Vista and includes a multilingual
administration console. Most importantly, we have added support
for Active Directory and Windows Single Sign-On. You can now reuse
Windows accounts stored in Active Directory to authenticate end
users of your PB applications. All this without any effort: Visual
Guard takes care of integration with AD for you.

Enable
Enterprise makes PB applications multilingual
The new 2.6 release of Enable
Enterprise fully supports PB 11.5, including
DW Tooltips and new properties. Work on Version 3,
the next major release, is far advanced with some exciting new
features in the pipeline. In particular, the interface with Google
Translation API will provide a rapid, first-pass translation
of all your new strings (for the multitude of Google-supported
languages), ready for human review. Corrections can be made efficiently,
on the fly, using Enable Runtime Explorer 2.5.
In addition, Enable Enterprise Version 3 will be supplied with
the source code (obfuscated) for Enable Engine,
allowing easy deployment with Appeon and PB.NET
(WinForms, WebForms). This represents an exciting advanced opportunity
to make your migrated web applications multilingual!

An Electronic File Cabinet in PowerBuilder - How to eliminate
your physical file cabinets
Even the best physical filing systems have drawbacks:
the cost of storage space, the need to pay rent for records that
have to be kept off-site […] We had to find a better way.
The vision was to totally eliminate our file cabinets. […]
We shopped around for a package, but decided to code our own PowerBuilder
solution. We built a custom "Electronic File Cabinet."

PowerBuilder .NET Web Services with Various Front Ends-A work in progress
Last year I wrote an article in PBDJ describing an ASP.NET project
that was done with DataWindow.NET in the browser and PowerBuilder
Web Services in the back end. […] This article covers solutions
that run in different browsers and on different operation systems.
I will also look at PowerBuilder 11.2 Webform although it is IE-only.
At the end I will cover PowerBuilder WinForm and PocketBuilder as
they could be solutions for applications that are not always connected.

Features in PowerBuilder 11.5 For client/server, Windows Forms
and Smart Client applications
In PowerBuilder 11.5 we introduce features that allow you to easily
give your existing DataWindows a new look and feel. New properties
are added to columns and controls to allow you to add tooltips.
You no longer have to settle for single-colored backgrounds. We
have introduced properties to control color gradients and translucency
for the background of columns, and most controls and bands.

PowerBuilder's .NET Strategy - PowerScript
language enhancements for .NET application development
.NET has become a mainstream programming platform. To be in line
with PowerBuilder's .NET strategy (.NET deployment and .NET development),
PB11 introduced many .NET-related features.
[…]These language features are a major step on PB's roadmap
to providing support for .NET platform, however they are relatively
isolated and have some limitations.

Setting the RowStatus
If you have worked with PowerBuilder for a while, you have learned
that setting the status of a row is not always a straight forward
procedure. I have created a handy utility which will simplify this
process.
