Novalys PowerBuilder Newsletter - December 2009

Dear PowerBuilder Users, we hope you are having fun with the beta version of PowerBuilder 12! Don’t forget that if you want PowerBuilder to fullfill all your expectations it’s very important that you give your feedback to Sybase. Also help us to monitor the PowerBuilder evolution by completing our PowerBuilder survey!

How PowerBuilder Got Its Groove Back
One of the main issues that PowerBuilder and PowerBuilder developers have been facing for the last few years is the lack of mind share for the product. [...] All that seems to have changed with Sybase's announcement of the beta of PowerBuilder 12.0.!
PBDJ article, by Bruce Armstrong

Migrating PowerBuilder Applications
You can migrate a PowerBuilder application from any version of PowerBuilder directly to any later version. Before you migrate to a later version, read this document to learn about changes in PowerBuilder that might affect your application.
This document addresses changes between PowerBuilder 6.5 and PowerBuilder 11.5. Read all sections that apply to your application. Subsections with IM in parentheses after their titles also apply to InfoMaker.

Spotlight on Visual Expert 6.0 features: Technical documentation for PL/SQL code
Visual Expert has already the comprehensive technical documentation for PowerBuilder code.
Now, Visual Expert 6.0 provides the technical documentation for PL/SQL code too! At one click, you can generate Packages, Stored procedures, Triggers, Types, Views... Try it yourself!

The user interface has been redeveloped to include a new navigation bar, new source code view with tooltips, and over 100 new macros to explore and clean up your code. Download Visual Expert 6.0

Implement a Calendar Component in PowerBuilder Applications
Those who answer to users probably agree that the style of the PowerBuilder applications have remained unchanged for far too long. While major improvements are anticipated with the release of the PowerBuilder 12 beta, developers who would like a quick face-lift for their applications are invited to continue reading here.

The New Generation of Decompilers
The latest development technologies rely on intermediate languages and can be decompiled. PowerBuilder is no exception. In this article, we will address the risks posed by decompilers. We will also discuss what can be done to protect against the possible negative results of decompilation - whether you create in-house applications, commercial applications, or are using these applications for your business.
PBDJ Article - Arthur Hefti

How to Protect PB Applications Against Reverse Engineering
PowerBuilder decompilers are becoming more and more powerful. This leaves PB applications open to reverse engineering and unauthorized operations. Someone could crack your software protection to perform illegal transactions or spread unprotected copies of your product. Both in-house and commercial applications can be affected.
PBProtect, the obfuscator for PowerBuilder, defends against reverse engineering. With no effect on execution time or maintenance, PBProtect’s one-click process is simple and effective.

Access Control for the Whole Enterprise
How can you give enterprise-wide access to business information, while still protecting sensitive data from unwanted manipulations?

Visual Guard offers a complete Access Control solution to manage authentication of end users and their permissions in your applications with one single solution.
VG provides authentication with username/password accounts as well as integration with Active Directory to save the time of creating a whole new user list and to implement Single Sign-On processes.

The Enterprise Edition of Visual Guard allows securing heterogeneous applications (PowerBuilder, .Net, Java, PHP, Delphi etc.) in the same unified solution. It also supports N-tier configurations.

Appeon 6.5 to be Released in Q1 2010
Isaac Zhang, the Appeon product manager, confirmed that Appeon would issue the next major release, Appeon 6.5 for PowerBuilder in Q1 2010. This coming version has many exciting features, such as "SaveAs PDF" without installing any client-side PDFPrinter, supporting open source JBoss as the application server, offering the server-call performance analysis tool, and so on. User friendliness will also be further improved by supporting developers configure and deploy more conveniently and flexibly.

Two EBFs were released within this November: Build 0097 for Appeon 6.2; Build 0060 for Appeon 6.1. Customers having valid support plans will find them available in the Sybase Product Download Center or can contact local Appeon distributor to get these upgrades.

Geokon - Success Story
PowerBuilder and PowerDesigner have made it easier for us to continuously improve our application. Simply put: We write less code than we would have to with other tools, and that enables us to deliver business functionality and new business features faster than we’d otherwise be able. Using Sybase also assures us the ability to maintain database independence as we look to extend our reach into other markets.

Enable 3.0 beta open!
Enable Enterprise has a new C++ engine that gives a performance boost to your multilingual applications. The new engine has been designed keeping in mind comments from the user-base, and supports:
- Static and dynamic (i.e.: user defined) dictionary
- Translation of datawindow, datastore and dwchild buffers from both dictionaries
- Current database structure (so no change is required) as well as a new format (more efficient)

The architecture has been completely reviewed and extended to support in-place database management, calling from non-PowerBuilder environments, new database tables and new open structure (XML) for the temporary file. These features will be available in the next versions, but needed a complete refactoring of the code.

If you’re current with our USP, you can participate in the beta program by writing to: support@enable-pb.com.
If you're not yet a client and want to try Enable, download our Demo Application
