Worldwide Survey 2010: The results are in!
The annual Novalys Powerbuilder survey results
are in. Thanks to the participation of the community of PB developers,
we've got a look at the trends. Not only did we look at the current
use of PowerBuilder but we also analyzed the impact of Java and
.NET on PowerBuilder users. Java/JEE technology has been used
widely for many years but Microsoft uses all its marketing power
to impose its platform, rallying the Sybase capabilities to its
cause…
What are the most awaited developments of PB? What proportion
of PB teams adopted .NET technology in 2010? Who’s still using
PB5? Who has moved to PB12? Where do you fit in?
Take
the 2011 PowerBuilder survey and see the results
from 2010!

Where Do You Go for PowerBuilder Info?
I've had a number of requests from people in the last few days
wondering how to get up to speed with more recent versions of
PowerBuilder. So I thought I'd try to address some of those concerns
by gathering together all of the knowledge sources I know of and
would recommend to learn more about newer versions of PowerBuilder.

What’s New in PowerBuilder 12.1?
The PowerBuilder 12.1 maintenance release is now available. For
people who believe that you should never use the .0 release of
any product, the maintenance release means they should feel comfortable
using PowerBuilder 12 now. However, there are several good reasons
other than that to get the maintenance release, including a number
of important new features it introduces. We'll look at the important
ones below.

Visual
Guard now supports multi-tenant applications!
Are your applications used simultaneously by independent groups of users (clients, partners, subsidiaries…)?
Visual Guard now supports multi-tenant applications, where a single instance of the application runs on a server, is used by multiple client organizations (or sets of users) and each client manages their data and security independently from the others.
Create independent groups of users, limit the privileges of an administrator to a single group, and provide administrators with a web interface to manage the security of their group.

Refactoring Corner: Partitioning DataWindow
Technology
A well-partitioned application will open the way for future code
migration to other GUI platforms. One of the main goals of PowerBuilder Classic application
refactoring is to divide the code into logical partitions. Although you will likely not gain
significant performance increases in exchange for your efforts, you will achieve two other
highly significant gains. This article explains those two goals.

Service-Based Architecture for the DataWindow
Service objects were introduced for PowerBuilder at about the
same time as the PowerBuilder Foundation Classes. Much like the
PFC, most programmers found reasons not to use them. In this article
we will reduce the complexity of these objects and in so doing
perhaps open a new world of efficient objects that are easily
maintained and understood.

Setting the Scene and Overview of a MEAP
The first in a series of short articles on moving to mobile: SUP
is a Mobile Enterprise Application Platform (MEAP), which in my
opinion and also of folks like Gartner, is the only way forward
in multiple application mobilization and multiple device support.
SUP abstracts the data access and Business Logic into Mobile Business
Objects (MBO's) that take care of accessing, updating and deleting
back end data. This series looks at how to use SUP to go mobile.
