Managing PowerBuilder and Transac-SQL applications with Visual Expert 5.7

We all meet the same problems while working on large PowerBuilder and Transac-SQL applications. It is difficult to master the whole project, especially for the parts that were developed by other people. The objective of this conference consists in explaining that good solutions exist, and demonstrate with case studies how to implement them. Visual Expert 5.7 adds Transac-SQL support to the PowerBuilder one. It analyses both PowerBuilder and T-SQL code at the same time. As its previous versions, Visual Expert provides impact analysis, code exploration, code review, technical documentation.

This conference is based on real case studies and code examples, such as for instance:
I want to modify a table in the DB and I need to list all the PB components and T-SQL procedures, which are using this table.
I want to change a stored procedure: which other procedures and PB objects are using it.
I have just arrived in a new project, which is maintaining a large application. How can I discover and master this code quickly?
How can I clean up the code to make it easier to maintain?

What do you do if suddenly your application has to be used in another country?
You localize of course, but how?
Using "Enable for PowerBuilder"!

This presentation describes Enable know-how and practical tools for transforming existing PowerBuilder applications into multilingual solutions.
Main topics covered include:

  • Architecture and principal components: multilingual database and database engine, translation engine, source code parser, tools and library; manipulation of flat-file databases using datawindow technology
  • Key concepts: source phrases, parametric phrases, contexts and rules of application, translation repository
  • Multilingual issues: dynamic language change, static and dynamic analysis, translating on-the-fly, translation contexts, resizing, synchronizing with multiple translators
  • Importance of integration with the application frameworks (PFC, in- house developed, ...) and of developer control
  • Special cases: multilingual source code, jargon, multiple active languages, multiple languages in a single datawindow, translating text files and non-visual elements
  • Localization of entire families of PB applications, from client/server and PocketBuilder to web
